Master stream work hinges on delivering a large volume of water with enough pressure to reach and control the fire. The amount of water you push through the nozzle—and the pressure you maintain at the nozzle—are what determine how much pump output you need. When you require a larger flow or a larger-diameter nozzle, you must supply higher discharge pressure to overcome the hydraulic losses in the hose and fittings and to drive water through the nozzle at the desired rate. If the nozzle pressure isn’t maintained while trying to push more water, the stream loses reach and effectiveness.

Other factors like lower friction, ambient temperature, or shorter distances would actually reduce the needed output rather than demand more. The key driver for increasing pump output in master stream operations is the need for higher nozzle pressure and larger required flow.
